The other day craft time led my family to Urgent Care because my four year old decided to shove a tiny white craft pom-pom up his nose. I watched the doctor extract the ball from my son and was struck with a realization that my son has a bad habit of doing things that don’t serve his best interest. At the same moment, I realized I too do things that don’t serve my best interest. I am guilty of not listening to the advice I give my clients. Sometimes I don’t get enough sleep, or I have moments of self-doubt and negative self-talk. I don’t stretch after every workout. I overindulge in the wine. I find periods of time when I am unmotivated and need to dig deep to get in my workout. I am hard on myself if I don’t perform my best. I have many habits that can get in the way of my goals. So, what does one do? Breathe. Take a bigger breath and BREATHE again. Take a moment and acknowledge those feelings and moments that are getting in the way. Be patient with yourself. Be gentle with your self talk. Regroup and keep in mind your goals and what habits will help you achieve them. Who knew that a tiny craft pom-pom would trigger self-reflection. Kids are full of teachable moments.
